An EMF meter is a scientific instrument for measuring electromagnetic fields (abbreviated as EMF). Most meters measure the electromagnetic radiation flux density (DC fields) or the change in an electromagnetic field over time (AC fields), essentially the same as a radio antenna, but with quite different detection characteristics.
From an EMF standpoint most plug-in devices produce two forms of low-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF): electric fields and magnetic fields. You would have to unplug the units in order to eliminate electric fields. E-fields will still be present even when the device is turned off. But most “EMF meters” measure magnetic fields. Mag-fields require current (amperage) so they are only present when the device is operating.
